Labour/Operator and Arena Caretaker

Reports to: Public Works Director and Public Works Foreman

Location: Plum Coulee, Gretna, Rhineland

Summary: The Municipality of Rhineland is seeking a dedicated Labourer/Operator and Arena Caretaker for a full-time permanent position. This role will combine heavy equipment operation and public works duties during the off-season, as well as caretaking and facility operations at the Plum Coulee or Gretna arenas during the winter season.

Key Responsibilities:

Arena Caretaker:

  • Operate and maintain ice-making and cleaning equipment (e.g., Zamboni)
  • Clean and maintain the ice surface, dressing rooms, public areas, and equipment
  • Handle skate sharpening and collect rental payments
  • Open and close the facility, monitor building security, and oversee rentals
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks within the arena
  • Assist with special events and respond to facility-related emergencies
  • Work evenings and weekends 

Labourer/Operator:

  • Operate heavy equipment including trucks, front-end loaders, graders, tractors with mowers, and other machinery
  • Assist with water and wastewater management, including maintenance and repair of municipal infrastructure
  • Perform routine vehicle and equipment maintenance
  • Assist with shop duties including inventory management, equipment repairs, and shop upkeep
  • Follow workplace safety regulations and maintain detailed reports
  • Respond to on-call duties as required
  • Regular daytime hours 

Experience and Qualifications

  • Knowledge of operating heavy equipment (e.g., front-end loaders, graders, tractors with mowers)
  • Familiarity with Zamboni operation and ice maintenance is a plus
  • Mechanical aptitude for equipment repairs and maintenance
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently
  • Physically able to perform manual tasks, including lifting up to 80 lbs
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required (Class 1 is an asset)
  • Previous experience in a similar role is preferred, but not required

Additional Position Requirements:

  • Travel to off-site locations as required
  • Exposure to construction site environments and varying weather conditions
  • Use of personal protective equipment (e.g., steel-toed safety boots)

Hours, Compensation and Benefits:

  • Pay range: $28-$32 per hour, depending on experience and is based on the Public Works scale as outlined in the collective agreement
  • Comprehensive benefits package and pension plan available after successful completion of probation
  • Arena Caretaker: Hours depend on ice times booked, up to 40 hours per week.
  • Labourer/Operator: Up to 50 hours per week
  • Overtime may be required
